Keeping house

I will admit, I suck at keeping house. I really don't have a good sense of what NEEDS to be done. I do the bare basics and have a cleaning lady twice a month.

I just swept the back deck off b/c it was disgusting. Why my husband or I do not think or feel the need to do this EVERY weekend is bothersome to me. Neither one of us has the housekeeping gene.

I am going to start a new chore board in our house. I want the girls to learn a bit more responsibility than I seem to have acquired. Every Saturday morning each family member is going to be assigned a chore. We will take 30 to 60 minutes to complete it. I explained to hubby who thinks it is a good idea. Problem is, we are the type of parents that want to go do a fun activity with the kids and all else takes a backseat. I am hoping I can make this happen in some fashion. The chores can be as simple as, take the garbage out in rooms, make beds, fold laundry. Some days it could be larger type of chore, organize bathroom closet.

Do you sweep your deck often ? Are you a good at keeping house ? How do you keep it all clean or at least manageable ??

We live in a 3000 sqft house and I have to say this is the first time I'm drowning in house cleaning.

It seems like one minute I get everything cleaned and the next it's a mess. Add in a sore elbow and I'm down for the count.

Your idea of making a chore list sounds good. I'm thinking of doing the same for Hope. Not only will you get something cleaned up but you will be teaching the girls to clean later!

WTG, Mom!

We have a small house so if I don't keep it clean, I start to feel the walls closing in.

I'm one of those people who get nervous around clutter and mess.

I need a clean space to relax; otherwise, I get all tense and twitchy.

I'm not going to be much help because I go through fits and starts. One week I can be susie homemaker and have everything pristine, the next the place looks like a disaster zone.

I married a man raised with a father who worked away a lot, a mom who was very house proud, and he had 4 sisters - he is the major housekeeper in this house, and I know I'm very lucky.

i don't clean as often as i used to. but it's always "neat" even if it is not technically "clean". there IS a difference. i make an honest attempt to "clean" every 2 weeks, although the bathroom i keep up on. (b/c one or both of the males in our home has bad/lazy aim.)

I suck with cleaning. I'm ok with the vacuuming, but dusting, not so much. I've involved the kids by using a chore chart I found online.

http://www.primalmommy.com/chorechart.html

It's so easy to put together. One of my kids was not a reader, so she chose to decorate her tags with pictures so she'd know what to do. Anyway--it helps us keep on track.

I'm terrible. Seriously. I will do anything and everything in my power to think of something else to do other than clean. I do what needs to be done to keep the house presentable, but spotless...never.

I have to have a clean/neat house or I get very anxious, and feel like I can't relax. But there are some things I am lazy about (like dusting which gets done MAYBE once in a month) and some things I am completely anal about (like cleaning my kitchen, which gets done probably 3 times a day!). The kids are responsible for cleaning the playroom but they have either me or Conrad directing (i.e. first pick up all the blocks, then the dress-up clothes, etc). Sunshine is old enough now that I have her clear her plate after meals and put it on the counter and occasionally put away her laundry. A good website for a chore chart is www.handipoints.com--you can create great charts that not only cover chores, but also for behavior and hygeine and things like that, and the kids can earn rewards and play games--my daughter really really loves it! My son isn't really old enough yet, but once he is, he will get his own chart too.

I'm terrible about cleaning the house. I'll do a big cleaning and think, wow if I just did little things once a week my house wouldn't need a BIG cleaning.

The little things never happen. I never remember them.

Oh I admire this new quest of yours. Let me know how it goes. My house is not the tidiest place either...

I hate cleaning so much but love to complain about it! Hard to clean when there are so many more fun things to do. Landon likes unloading the dishwasher with me though!! We don't sweep porch or back area nearly enough! That's why I have people over so I have to clean up! My nanny does light housework but we need a maid!

I am a horrible housekeeper and, furthermore, I don't even care. The only time I ever even think about cleaning up is if someone is coming over. In my defense, our problem is mostly STUFF where it doesn't belong, not like DIRTINESS. So basically, under the piles of crap, the floor is clean, if that makes me seem any less of a slob.

argh - I am a clean freak of all freaks!! BUT, the good thing is that having children has made me less of a freak. I USED to be one of 'those' women who had a floor you could eat off of! Kids are messy, little germs, walking about, finger printing everything up, smudging all my lovely things. We have a dog now as well, and unfortunately, I have to dust and vacuum WAY more than I did on a normal basis (which was A LOT). DON'T EVER GET A DOG WITH LONG HAIR!!!!!!!!!!! I hate our dog and she has literally ruined my floor, my carpets, my air! I spend 2-4 hours per day cleaning my house (3500 sq ft). Like Melissa sadi - I am drowning in house cleaning. I have no help. I used to have a cleaning service every other week. But I fired them, I have issues with paying someone who can't even clean a toliet! I will find a service, they do great for a couple of months and then they start to suck arse. I have een through 5 services and am just sick and tired of it. So I do it myself now, all of it. IT sucks!!
Oh, and outside- I DON'T TOUCH!!!! Hubbie does nothing inside, I do nothing outside!! That is my motto. If Istart to do anythingoutside, it will become my permenant chore!

I will admit it right here and now...I have a cleaning woman come in once a week. She even does laundry. Currently, she is on vacation for three weeks...and I am swimming in laundry and cleaning!

I have a cleaning lady come nowt that I'm back at work. Before I used a schedule that Real Simple posted. It broke chores down into daily, weekly, monthly and seasonally.

The things like sweeping the deck we just do on an as needed basis. I wouldn't sweat it that it got gross. You'll probably be more aware and do it sooner next time.

I've got a wicked chore spreadsheet that I'm happy to email you if you want to borrow it. I must warn you: it is devastating to look at and will make you want to crawl into a corner and cry. Or maybe that's just me. (I don't have the gene, either.)

Love , love , love your blog. I'm going to read it ALL! And I tagged you on my blog.

Oh man. I used to be REALLY neat and clean. That was BK (Before kids). Now? I can't believe the level of slobbiness that works for me. Just can't believe it. I actually get a little sad when I remember how I used to be and how I wish I still had that kind of motivation to keep the place looking nice.

It seems I can only keep up with one floor at a time. We have two floors plus a basement. I can never, ever have all three clean at once.

And I have TOTALLY been a slacker on the hard core cleaning. I do fairly well keeping up with the clutter, only because clutter annoys the hell out of me. But the dust? The floors? The window sills and blinds and fans and baseboards? All filthy. And it is just sad!!!

Hi- I'm terrible at keeping house. Thats because there are so many many other things I want to do when I'm home. I have a lot of hobbies. Writing is one of them , and lately have been doing alot of that. Plus , I have a cleaning business, and who wants to come home and do the same thing they have been doing all day at work , you know?

I used to be SO meticulous. Our house is 3200 square feet and currently about 200 square feet are "company ready." The other 3000 feet need Merry Maids. Which would be me, unfortunately. And seriously, someone needs to wash these windows!

Nope, I'm not good at it either. I hate clutter & mess & am pretty good about dealing with that. But good hard cleaning, not so much. I will do it, but usually after it's more obvious. And like you, then I'm going "oohh why didn't I do this sooner?!" lol

Oh also, I've tagged you!
Check out my blog for how it works:

We have a weekly cleaning person too. And I'm a neat freak. yet somehow everything still gets messy.

Our house is "only" about 1900 square feet and I suck at housecleaning. Friday is my day to work from home and I usually end up cleaning between checking work e-mail and blogging. ;)

Like right now? I need to be folding three loads of laundry and scrubbing the tub. Ahem.

With 3 kids, 2 dogs and a full time job that has me out of the house 40 hours a week and working from home an additional 10-15 hours a week - I have a cleaning lady that comes every other week. I can't wait for a few years from now, when we should have debt paid off and I will have her come every week - because I'm OCD-ish and mess/dirt REALLY bothers me, but I don't have the time to keep the house as clean as I want, so then it just makes me cranky.

I'm really good about the clutter (I tend to throw a LOT out, because I can't stand having crap around my house) but it's the vacuuming and washing floors and dusting that I just have no time for.

Oh, and the outside of the house? Not my domain - I let my husband deal with that. Which he doesn't. So it looks like crap but for some reason, that doesn't bother me.

In Seattle we don't need to sweep our decks, we have wind and rain that do it for us.

I am a crappy house keeper though. Mr. T is the one that cleans the floors and the laundry. (Although you could eat off our toilets they are so clean I have a sick obsession with clean toilets and bathrooms!) I figure I can clean when I am dead. It isn't like anyone is going to put on my headstone "She was a GREAT MOMMA but a crappy house cleaner"

Well, maybe in my family they would!

I am *hate* cleaning. I do it when I have to...which is probably not as often as I should.

I hate cleaning house. 4200 square feet, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 47 lightbulbs, 6 ac filters, 10 garbage cans, 5 toilets, yard work, ice makers, ovens................no maid, no yard man, I don't even work, after all. Taking care of the house and kids is the least I can do! "You're so lucky, you know," the other mother's say. How often I hear- "You have everything," and cringe because I must agree. I have it all.
